That was three years ago. Lynne B. suggested that since I've come off the busiest year I've had in recent memory and am suffering again from crazy allergy attacks, migraines, irritability, sleeplessness, and occasional nose bleeds, that perhaps a break from cooked and processed foods would do me good if for no other reason then to re-calibrate some habits and give my body a chance to heal on its own free from meds and sleep-aids.
In fact, if I accepted her challenge (okay, it was a bet) of going raw for the month of April, which is tougher to pull off than a juice or smoothie fast, she'd treat me to a shmancy art book I've had my eye on for months. Now. Before you scoff, this is like the Cadillac of journal-y art books...the paper feels like fabric and it's hyuge...perfect for my new collection of spooky "fairy" tales for adults.
So, that's what got me to go raw. Not the onslaught of Spring-induced allergy attacks but an art book. The good news is, I'm not alone! My good friend, singer/song-writer Michelle and mentor Patricia are onboard as well next month which is comforting.
I've arranged to have a little wiggle-room (aka Lynne took pity on me), due to this being a cuh-razy month for school and poetry programming, in the category of condiments and milks. I'm allowed pre-made salad dressing (but nothing milk based...think Annie's Goddess or Bragg's olive oil based salad dressing), and hummus, but I have to try to make my own at some point during the month from raw ingredients. Also, am allowed almond milk or coconut milk from the store for smoothies if I'm in a pinch. I'm armed with a Vitamix, a Champion juicer, TWO types of veggie slicers including the ever treacherous mandoline (I've heard so many horrible stories about bloody knuckles) as well as one of those thingies I can make noodles out of raw zucchini!
I'm supposed to report back with photos and updates to keep me honest, so stay tuned...
But for now, I can't wait to make this raw strawberry cheesecake! And a raw pie that my friend Marcus has sworn me to secrecy if he gives me his recipe. Woo-hoo!
