Perhaps as if in anticipation of today's foraging, my face shut down last night with a right proper allergy attack (this results in tummy problems because all the gross stuff drizzling down from my ears to my stomach) that lasted until this afternoon. Even though I began today with green tea (no coffee?! Wha?! Huh?!) and a fresh carrot/apple/ginger/lemon juice from the champion juicer himself (see what I did there?), Poohbear Daddypants, I felt like I was gonna croak and I think actually did make some truly impressive croaking noises on my way back to bed and then while shivering under the covers.
I slept for three more hours (some days, I really am thankful for that grad-school life), dreamed about Thai take-out being washed down a drain, and woke up ravenous and feeling much better. I immediately HOUSED a spinach and arugula salad and for "dessert" am now nibbling on this simple recipe introduced to me by my friend and fellow poet and amazing vegan/raw/juicing guru, Makalani Bandele. It's basically just oranges (in this case cuties), avocado, a drizzle of olive oil and sea salt. Strangely, absurdly simple and deeeeeeerishus.
I'm definitely looking forward to kicking some bad habits out the door this month and some fairly hairy symptoms of non-health, which includes the copious amounts of allergy meds cocktails I have to take to stave off the sinus gremlins AND the sleep-aids I end up having to take during the week.
Thrilled that super-wordsmith poeta and ultra radical sister in arms, Patricia Smith, who has embarked upon a raw food lifestyle in years past, is on Team Raw this April. She and my friend, vocalist and songwriter, Michelle Hollis have made the notion of a departure from processed and cooked foods this month super palatable with their enthusiasm. Patricia, who apparently is the recipe and raw resource queen, just linked us to this raw foods site and I don't know bout y'all but that chocomole recipe is callin my name!! And the breakfast banana sushi? I gotta try that just on principality!
So! So far so good on Day 1...I've basically survived. Dinner will most likely be another giant salad (slow and steady, folks, just lemme get through the first week, lol) and maybe some apples and almond butter for dessert. I know if Mak were here, he'd be telling me to drink more water so the detox won't hurt s'bad, so I'ma go handle that right now!
